Update
June 2007Well it's been a long time since I've been on this page! Our exercising/schooling pen has been a real success. It's so helpful when trying to gain the confidence of the horses and also some riders! There is nowhere for them to go so they have to relate to each other and "bond". Young or confused horses look to the only other form of life that is with them and begin to realize that we can become their "friend" and actually begin to like us! Then the learning curve is so much easier to climb. Our full set of show jumps are in situ in the field. Having had many hours of rubbing down and painting through the winter. The boxes are pressure-washed regularly and re-painted where necessary in between clients. a lot of work but worth it in order to keep the place looking clean and tidy. Also very much helps keep any risk of infection to a minimum. We have had a lot of changes on the staff front mainly to keep up our high standards. Becky is still with us as my excellent Head-girl. She did a lot of my riding after my serious accident of last year. Most of the owners were delighted with her efforts even though at times she was very much thrown in at the deep end. She is now still riding a lot of the young horses coming through and managing the yard very competently when I am not around. We now have a lot of very reliable part-time girls coming in. It is so imperative to have reliability when running any kind of establishment. They are all very attentive to the high standards that we and our clients expect. Many thanks go to them all....Becky, Laura, Shirley,Kate, and newcomer Jen. Also Helen who comes in to help with the schooling and riding. Update November 2004 Having finished the 2004 event season its now heads down to
finish the
building work re the stables. The exercise pen is installed and
functioning well. Was a real help as we prepared for the last three
events as the weather broke with a lot of rain and gales. I was able to
lunge and ride in the pen which saved the horses legs and the fields.
We still have the show jumps out and because they are used
intermittently are still able to be utilized.
Update July 2004 The potential here is enormous, with 30 acres of pasture, two large agricultural buildings, one of which will be an American style barn and the other will be a small indoor arena. Within a fortnight of moving in, contractors arrive to make 1700 bales of June hay (see below)! Had an army of helpers to manhandle it inside. Since it was done we haven't had three dry days in succession. There are now eight paddocks, ringed in double height electric fence for the night time along with temporary day boxes in one of the sheds for all the horses. Kirsty Balman has joined Trilby as right-hand-girl along with Katherine Hugh who is here until September before going to college. Due to their help, Trilby has been able to keep the four resident horses up to scratch with their work routine. While, in-between, painting show-jumps, cutting hedges and picking out stone walls with the odd event as well.
