    SEPTEMBER 2007

Well..the season has run away with us again! Senator is well established running in Novice sections. Not without dramas but that would make life too easy. Dressage and Show jumping is still improving, X.country has given both of us pause for thought. His first outing at Stockland Lovell was probably the easiest one to ride although he was fairly spooky. Then there were a lot in between where he reckoned he knew it all and stopped listening. He was then pulled up short and was "organized" in no uncertain terms. He then through his dummy out of the pram and said if he couldn't do it his way he wouldn't do it at all. He's still testing the water but, although looking long and hard at a spooky bounce and trying to destroy the triple bar into the water at Charlton Park, he then seemed to grow up in about five strides and finished the last two thirds of the course a different horse. Feeling and looking like he had at long last relaxed to the job in hand. We have one more outing at Tweseldown provided it is not cancelled due to foot and mouth.

Thunder is on the market. We have decided, or perhaps he has!, that he will be happier at a slightly lower level in eventing. His show jumping is very good. His dressage is even better and he loves hunting. He will be advertized in the Horse and Hound this week. He is a real character and could give the whole family a lot of fun.

Lucy Stevens has been back with the eventing team having purchased Mr. Tommas earlier in the year. A lovely horse with a really willing character. Their first outing together was the Pony Club Area trials where he produced a lovely double clear  and fair dressage to Qualify for the National Pony Club Championships at Nottingham. For a horse who had spent nearly four years  kicking his heels in a field  it  was a real baptism of fire! All  credit goes to Lucy, with some  input  from  me,  for a really good seasons' work. They achieved another brilliant double clear at the championships only being pulled down by a dressage test that was asking a huge question from a very willing character with very few miles under his belt. As a partnership they have gone on to complete many Pre-novice classes at BE Events. Mr. Tommas is having to learn very quickly and has risen to the challenge  like his exemplary Welton and Master Spiritus breeding. Lucy has been sensitive with him and given him every oppurtunity to realize his potential.

Katy Rowe has been with us this season as well with her loan horse, Cornish Bantry Bay. Katy takes on "Marmite" after the horse has finished a season's hunting with her owners. She has done an excellent job, working hard on the dressage phase. Having to introduce things like circles and half-halts with which Marmite was not comfortable! They have romped through Pre-novice moving on to the more challenging Novices. Some of these haven't always gone to plan but it.s all a good learning curve and Katy has dealt with the disappointments and not been afraid to confront them.

Lucy and Katy have been a real tonic to have on board the team. They've been a credit to the yard. As has Becky, my great head-girl. Without her input, behind the scenes this year, but watch this space for next season!, we would not have been able to even leave the yard. WELL DONE GIRLS!

These will be updated as soon as possible in between competitions.

    JUNE 2007

Things have moved on a lot from last year.I started competing again in Nov  2006. We did some unaffiliated dressage up at The Grange. Headley Senator and Copper Carisma, (Thunder) coming away with two rosettes apiece. Becky rode the two babies, Waternish Dream and Rambling Allie. They both behaved beautifully, managing to contain themselves in both  tests in which they were entered. We did some unaffiliated indoor show jumping where Thunder was placed and qualified for the Indoor Winter League Championships. There was another dressage show where again we were in the top three places. Also did some Indoor BSJA where Thunder clocked up a fourth in the Discovery class.

In March we were at The Grange again.. Thunder winning both his classes at Novice level.. Senator also did well coming 2nd and 3rd in two Novice tests. April brought the Cornwall Dressage Group's first competition of the year at Tall Trees. Interestingly enough we ended up with the same results for both horses only this time there were prizes for the highest percentages as well! Becky rode Allie again achieving her first placing of a fourth in a Prelim test.

Our first eventing outing was to Moreton in Dorset. Thunder ran in an Intro class. We finished on our dressage score to come 2nd overall. It was a lovely way to start the season especially after such a long convalescent period.

Second time out was to a Pre-novice at Stockland Lovell. We should have had a second run at Intro level  but the event was cancelled due to lack of entries. Unfortunately it was a step too quick for Thunder who decided he really could not cope with the water towards the end of the course. He had done all the technical stuff early on so I was a bit fed up to say the least. It was Senator's first time out since April 2006 so he was very brave to have an ok dressage test, two down in the show jumping and a great clear x-country to finish up with a 9th placing.

Senator has had two runs since then. Pre-novice at Pontispool and Novice at West Wilts. Had two stops x-country at the former and one at the latter both down to the fact that we are changing his education slightly in order to improve his technique. He is not being allowed to bowl in on the stride he chooses at slightly too fast a pace. He has to wait for the shorter one to get his shoulders up and at the moment he is still arguing the point at times. It is improving his show jumping dramatically and the adjustment will happen across the country. He even had his first double clear in a 1.00M class BSJA to finish 7th out of a jump-off with 29 starters!

Thunder also doing well at BSJA with a 2nd in 95cms class. He also did exceptionally well at St Columb horse show. Entering the Ridden Hunter showing class and the Working Hunter class, winning both of them and claiming the Working Hunter Championship and the Reserve Championship for the whole day. His talents are endless! Amazing what a good bit of schooling can do! Not to mention looking the part. He was ridden beautifully that day by Helen Keen. She has a lot of experience in the showing circuit and did him proud!

Senator's next outing should be Novice at Nutwell Court.

    JUNE 2006

Well......there is a good old Scottish saying:

The best laid plans of mice and men gang aft awa'

Which in case one can't decipher means that nine times out of ten Plan A is often never achieved!

The reason I have time to update the website is because I am sitting in bed with a shattered pelvis not to mention
a major problem with the sciatic nerve down my left leg.
It all happened at Bovington event......

Had four horses on board consisting of three of my rides and Michelle brought her horse up with us.I had never
been to Bovington before.Stables were fairly elderly and well used but the beds were good with rubber floors.
Everything was within easy reach. We  had to leave the stable area by 9am and were not allowed back.Having said
that the parking was in good reach of everything and  there were troughs in the fields for water.
SENATORS dressage was very tense, BASH seemed to be better and THUNDER..( COPPER CARISMA) on
his first outing went very well indeed.Show jumping...BASH had one fence down, SENATOR had two. I rode him
across country first. He had a very good round with approx. 4 time penalties. I was a bit surprised at that but having
not ridden the course before I miscalculated on time. I'm afraid BASH and I did not complete the course so COPPER
CARISMA did not show jump or go across country.
With  BASH we started the round really well. There was a biggish corner early on in the course, coming off a turn,
which she jumped with ease. The next fence was a fairly simple palisade type . The ground was running slightly
down-hill to it. We approached it well on a good rythm but as I asked her to take off she must have come slightly up
but then put down again which meant that she hit the fence hard and somersaulted over the top. I was thrown clear
but unfortunately she had difficulty getting up and fell back on me! Ho hum! I've now visited at least four of the West
Country hospitals. Bash luckily was unhurt with a slight graze to her back leg.

    April 2006

Well.... where did last year go?

Lucy has moved on to University so Blitzen is back at Smiths Farm ready to try the Intermediate tracks with myself.

Senator is fit and ready for the season. Starting off with Novice tracks....having had a double clear in his first Novice
    at Urchinwood  Manor 2005.

Thunder has joined the eventing team. He's owned by Mrs Arlene Burley and will be competing at Intro level initially.

Bash is back again this season. She is owned by Mrs.Emily Lobb. She will be beginning the season with a few Pre-
Novice outings then, if all goes well, progressing to Novice.

Everyone is working hard at the yard. I have a job to get Kirsty, my headgirl, to take time off! She is helped at the
moment by some very reliable part-timers.....Kate, Shaun, his sister Amy and even his Mum, Debbie...a real family
effort! Katherine is doing one day a week in between college commitments and Anna when away from school. I
can't begin to say how much I appreciate their efforts.
The one person I haven't mentioned, without whom none of this would be happening, is Andrew who was incessantly
at the yard while at the same time working very long hours with his building business.
Also this year I have some part-time help from Helen and Michelle helping with the riding and exercising of all the
horses. Not to mention the training and breaking-in of some  youngsters. They are both very professional and
reliable in their approach to all aspects of the work involved.
With all this team effort it won't be for the want of trying that our horses won't be prepared!

Due to a long spell of dry weather we were able to bring our show-jumps out earlier than usual which helped
with the preparation. Also a fairly new cross-country course about forty minutes from us has a substantial
amount of fences at varying heights with lots of variety and a good water complex for training. It is at a place called
Chyverton which is on the main A30 in Cornwall.

In 2005 both MILLTOWN BASH and HEADLEY SENATOR qualified for the Intro Regional Finals. BASH also
qualified for the Pre-novice Regional Finals. We chose not to enter the relevant Intro classes because we felt that both
horses were jumping Pre-novice with ease and would be moving up to Novice fairly early on in the season. To ride
in the finals would be a backward step in their programme, although of course we were delighted that they achieved
the opportunity to enter the classes. BASH  will do the Pre-novice finals fairly soon.
The early plans for the season are ALDON event..17th-19th March followed by PORTMAN...4th &5th April.  then
    BOVINGTON 23rd April.

MILLTOWN BASH, HEADLEY SENATOR & BLITZEN all started with lots of exuberance. This did not help
Senator's dressage although he is definitely more mature. He just needs to relax that little bit more to really show the judges
how well he can perform. Still having too many show jumps down but less than last year! Cross-country from all three
horses has been really promising. Bash has still to listen a bit more so that the technical fences in Novice will not prove a
problem....she's a bit too bold and almost too laid back! Needs to move on to Novice fairly soon. We will do Pre-novice
Reg. Final at Stockland Lovell then follow on with Novice tracks.
SENATOR is proving to have made the transition to Novice really well. He just eats up the cross-country tracks...they are not
an issue for him. BLITZEN will begin with Open Novice tracks to consolidate the new partnership.

    2005 Season

We started off the season with three trips to Exeter Equestrian Centre at Poltimore. Entering BSJA shows to get some show jumping practice in.We also went to Tall Trees  near Davidstow for the same reason. Oliver is now back in work. He had to be tested to see if he was up to more athletic work  having been brought into work gently initially. He proved he was up for it by finishing third in a qualifier for Bath and West Show and being placed several times  at other shows. Senator is finding out at long last where his legs are achieving some double clears in the Starter classes which are such good training for the young horse. Lucy put several gremlins to bed in the show-jumping ring riding with great determination to win a Discovery class and finish up jumping Newcomers/1.10 M Open classes with confidence.
Lucy also did some Dressage competitions. Having consistant training over several weeks her partnership with Blitzen improving all the time they won their class with 71.2% . They were third in another class (despite two errors of course by Lucy!) with 67%.
By March all three were ready to go to Aldon for the first event of the year.

    Senator
Pre-Novice class : Had`a good dressage score of 31 which put him into 4th place. Managed to make that totally irellevant by having four down in the show jumping.....a case of being too enthusiastic! X-country went well in spite of a run out at a corner again because of not being prepared to listen to his rider. At least he enjoys his job. The fine-tuning will come.

    Blitzen
Novice class : Started well with the top dressage score of 31.One down in the show-jumping and then Lucy and he were on a mission putting in a blistering clear round x-country. A little too keen....clocking up 2.4 time penalties for going too fast. As they are aiming for Intermediate this year though they will have to get used to more metres being covered in less time. They  finished the day in 2nd place which was a great way to start the season.

    Oliver
Intermediate Novice class :  Decided to break Oliver in gently with some Int Nov runs. Unfortunately he was eliminated twice while in pain with bleeds from his kidney which accumulated in his abdomen last year. The  vets initially thought he had a huge tumour. If only they could speak sometimes!!  The horse that is not the vets!  He had a good dressage score of 33.3 putting him into 3rd place. Like Senator he was also a bit keen in the show-jumping having two down.Went well across the country but was definitely rusty despite having been out training several times. He finished up 12th.

    Gatcombe 8-10th April

    Oliver
Intermediate - Novice class : Oliver had a reasonable dressage in good company, the royal wedding and grand national were blaring from the big screen which was situated next to the arena..... a little exciting! He put in a fantastic show jumping performance and was one of only three clears. Oli was going extremely well across country until he met the water, where he had a disappointing 20 penalties. Despite this he ended up 11th.

    Blitzen
Novice class : Blitzen was in the top 10 after dressage after producing an active test, essential if he is to move up to intermediate soon. He had a nice clear round in the showjumping and thoroughly enjoyed the cross country, going clear through all the direct routes. He was just over the time picking up a couple of time penalties. This was an other pleasing outing as Lucy and Blitzen finished in 6th place, receiving a rosette from HRH Princess Anne.

After Gatcombe Oliver went cross country schooling to try and sort out his doubts with the water jump. A trip to a local course near Wadebridge, and a slightly longer journey to the outstanding Rosamund Green Farm, meant he had gained confidence and was ready for the next event.

Unfortunately Bicton was abandoned due to the horrendous rain meaning Senator and Blitzen were disappointed  and had to stay at home! These things happen I suppose, we just had to wait for our next event which was at Pontispool Farm, near Taunton.

    Pontispool 1st-2nd May

    Oliver
Intermediate - Novice class :  Oliver was in a good position after the dressage with a very good score of 33.3. He jumped a lovely clear in the showjumping, maintaining a top score. A clear in the cross country was pleasing as this course had two water complexes, both of which he sailed through.  The time was proving extremely hard to get all day and Oliver incurred a very unusual 10 time penalties.... a little annoying as he is  normally well within the time. He was  7th overall.

    Blitzen
    Intermediate - Novice class :
Lucy rode really well in all phases of this event. A bit daunting for her as it was her first Intermediate test and bigger show jumps. Had to work hard in the show jumping but  did well to give Blitzen the confidence to jump the bigger track. Had a lovely clear x.country round despite losing a shoe on the way round. Lucy wasn't placed but it was a good experience to get under her belt.

    Senator
    Pre-Novice class :
Senator  was fairly relaxed in the dressage which gave us the credible score of         . We were a bit lucky in the show jumping with just one down. He was very on his toes warming up for the x.country but gave me a lovely ride listening well especially through the off-set combination two thirds of the way round the course. Finished inside the time ending up 6th overall.

    Stockland Lovell  15th May.

    Senator
Pre-Novice class: After warming in well for the dressage Senator took exception to the judge's car door being open as he was going down the centre line which meant  we were tense throughout leading to a score of forty. One day he will grow up! He redeemed himself slightly by having a very lucky clear round in the show jumping. Only to throw it all away  by having a very spooky run-out at a narrow roll-top fence going into the water. It might have been kinder to have an alternative there to encourage our babies! Needless to say he jumped well across the remainder of the course and  probably  grew up a tad by the  last fence.

    Blitzen
    Novice class:
I think Lucy would prefer to forget this event although we all think Blitzen did have an excuse! He had a fairly good dressage and jumped well while warming up for the show jumping. He then proceeded to have a stop at the first fence and again at the second. Lucy then rode as if her life depended on it and completed the course. Unfortunately while representing him after the first fence misdemeanor they managed to knock over the timing equipment gaining a technical elimination for them both. They would have been allowed to run cross country but the ground was exceptionally hard in places despite the efforts of  rotavating. Also Blitzen had lost a pad from his front shoe which probably stung 999his feet in the s.j. Lucy decided to call it a day to preserve her horse, frustrating at the time but, in my opinion, the right decision.
